Medical misdiagnosis or delay in medical diagnosis in the context of child psychology services arises where a minor either does not receive a correct diagnosis or there is a delay in receiving the appropriate treatment in a timely manner.
In 2021, the HSE commenced an investigation into the files of children and adolescents who had received care between 2016 to 2020 at CAMHS. Parents have recently been informed that there was a delay in diagnosing children and in some cases, children were misdiagnosed with the consequence that they did not receive appropriate care. The review is ongoing and parents are being invited to attend meetings to discuss the mismanagement in care In January 2023, the HSE confirmed that they are to now conduct a major review of cases at the North Kerry child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS). The review is expected to be similar to that conducted at the neighbouring South Kerry CAMHS service.
